Counties of Norway

There used to be 18 administrative regions called as “counties” in Norway. Those counties were subdivided into 422 municipalities.

Now there are only 11 counties in Norway (and 356 municipalities):

Oslo is the capital of the country and also a county.

 Østfold

  • It has a 4,180.7 km2 land area in total. Its population is 284,962.
  • Østfold is governed by Anne Enger and Ole Haabeth is the county’s mayor. The slogan of the county is “The heartland of Scandinavia”.
  • 84.69% of the population living in Østfold is Christian, 2.74% is Muslim, and 0.44% is Buddhist.
  • The official language of the county is Bokmål.
  • The income per capita was 138,600 NOK in 2001 and it is equal to 17 595.27 U.S. dollars by today.

Akershus

  • Its land area is 4,918 km2 in total. It is the second most populous county in Norway by its 573,326 population.
  • The governor of the county is Nils Aage Jegstad.
  • 81.48% of the population living in Akershus is Christian, 1.93% is Muslim, and 0.35% is Buddhist.
  • The official language of the county is Bokmål.
  • The income per capita was 182,400 NOK in 2001 and it is equal to 23 150.208 U.S. dollars by today.

Oslo

  • Its land area is 454.08 km2 in total. It is the most populous county in Norway by its 672,061 population.
  • Oslo is the capital of Norway. Also, it is the economic and governmental centre of the country. The city is home to many maritime companies in Europe.

Globalization and World Cities Study Group and Network ranked Oslo as “Beta World City” in 2008.  Furthermore ECA International ranked Oslo as the second most expensive city in 2011.

Hedmark

  • Its land area is 27,397 km2 in total. It is the 11th most populous county of Norway by its 194,236 population.
  • The governor of the county is Sigbjørn Johnsen.
  • 89.1% of the population living in Hedmark is Christian, 0.78% is Muslim, and 0.18% is Buddhist.

 Oppland
